2022 Little Brunswick Heathcote Shiraz
Tasting Notes
Style: Heathcote is my 'home' winemaking region. It is where I grew up in a little town named Redesdale. One of my future project ideas is to craft refined Shiraz wines from three vineyards within Heathcote to display some of the subregions. However, for now, we are still very small producers and one example of this beautiful region's Shiraz is enough! When grown in Cambrian soil, Heathcote Shiraz is rich yet restrained. Notes of fire grilled plum and cocoa powder sit alongside gamey meats and dark chocolate. This is my favourite wine to have when the weather is cool. When I drink this wine I think of where I grew up, in a space that felt infinite and I remember the gully breeze that used to bring relief on hot days where the scent of eucalypts filled the air. Winemaking: The fruit for this wine is sourced from the top of the hill at Gez Kennedy's place near Colbinnabbin near a gully that is so step it can only be worked by hand. The soil is quite shallow and extremely rich in the Cambrian greenstone deposits that make Central and Northern Heathcote famous. 20% whole bunch ferment in open tanks for three weeks to allow a gentle ferment and encourage a more powdery tannin structure.
